INTRONAUTS

Tiny submarines speeding through the human body…

What could possibly go wrong?

In the company’s 40th year, Green Ginger has created Intronauts, its 21st original theatre show. A co-production with Nordland Visual Theatre and funded by Arts Council England, Intronauts is available for worldwide touring throughout 2020 - 22.

Captivating and emotive...really quite beautiful” THE VERSE

WHAT IS INTRONAUTS ABOUT?

In a not-too-distant future, people can buy personal cleaners called Intronauts; miniaturized human workers injected into their bodies to carry out essential maintenance.

Green Ginger’s Intronauts propels audiences into a microscopic journey deep within a human being; an adventure story complete with big screens, tiny buttons and body parts. The show takes its cue from classic sci-fi movies and deals with such diverse topics as nano-technology, self-care and isolation in an increasingly 'connected' world.

Fuelled by physical comedy and innovative puppetry, Intronauts offers an intoxicating inner body experience that really gets under the skin...

WHO IS IT AIMED AT?

Intronauts is aimed at grown-up teenagers and childish adults. Green Ginger has honed its craft in the creation of darkly comic shows that have a political heart, but do not preach; performances that can touch raw nerves and disturb minds, yet leave its audiences thoroughly entertained.

We suggest a ‘PG’ rating - there is some raw language and scenes that may be frightening young children.

WHAT WILL AUDIENCES EXPERIENCE?

Intronauts is an hour-long, absurd and highly visual performance with puppetry, physical comedy and original music by composer Simon Preston. Three storytellers will introduce audiences to bizarre dystopian, post-truth worlds both outside and within the human body.

PUPPETRY IN INTRONAUTS

Green Ginger’s trademark puppetry alongside innovative lighting and projection solutions allows it to create a cinematic feel; wide shots for establishing micro-worlds can be swiftly followed by close-up action using multi-operator puppetry, deftly operated by experienced manipulators.

Untethered by the physical laws that govern human actors, puppetry allows the company to whisk audiences off to fantastical places in an instant, and in this journey inside the human body, Green Ginger’s vast experience in breathing life into the inanimate comes to the fore.

HOLOGAUZE

Intronauts is a highly visual show with minimal text. To give greater access to the show for those with hearing impairments, Green Ginger has integrated live captioning into the show using Hologauze, an innovative projection surface developed in the company’s home town of Bristol.

Other developments in the accessibility of the company’s work now feature in Intronauts, including touch tours for sight-impaired audiences. To discover more about Green Ginger’s work across the theatre sector in developing access for marginalised practitioners and audiences, follow this link.
